What Parents Can Do
As a parent you shouldn't feel like your hands are tied. You can make an !mpact on your child's future. Don't be afraid to be the parent. It might be difficult now, but it will pay off in the long run. Here's what you can do:
- Talk to your kids early and often.
- Make sure that alcohol in your home is not assessable to your children.
- Refuse to provide alcohol to your child or their friends.
- Be at home when your teen has a party.
- Make sure alcohol is not brought into your home or onto your property by your
child’s friends.
- Never assume that your standards are the same as other parents. Always
confirm that alcohol will not be served at the parties your child attends.
- Create alcohol-free opportunities and activities in your home so teens will feel welcome.
- When you know of a teen party in progress, contact the Amarillo Police Department at 378-3038, Randall County Sheriff at 468-5800 or Potter County Sheriff at 379-2900. If your reading this and your not from this area, just call 911 and ask to speak to someone about reporting a party.
- Report businesses selling alcohol to minors by calling 1-800-THE-TABC. • For more tips, go to “Help for Parents.”
Remember, you are the first line of defense in your children's drug and alcohol usage. Educate your children, be a part of their lives, and TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN..... NOW! |
